Mattie Ruth Garrard was born December 23, 1930 in Robeline, Louisiana. God took her home March 22, 2015 after a brief illness. Visitation will be Thursday, March 26th from 5 to 7 and the funeral will be on Friday at 2, both at Centuries Memorial on Mansfield Road. Mattie was the fourth child of ten born to sharecropper parents, so she grew up knowing how to pull her own weight. She spent much of her life caring for children whose parents worked, many of whom have remained in contact with her throughout the years and consider her family. She always noticed when friends and family members were going through hard times and would somehow know exactly what they needed, and would do everything in her power to make sure they had it. MaaMaa, as the grandkids called her, loved for the family to gather at her house for Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners—then she’d delegate the cleaning to the younger group and sit back and enjoy the company. MaaMaa and Paw (Jack) were married fifty years and for all those years they were inseparable. They raised three kids, Mike Jordan, Sr. (Rebecca), Pam Jordan Davis (Hollis) and Betty Cook, and played a big role in raising most of their grandchildren (Mike Jordan, Jr. (April), Bryce Davis (Mikisha), Cory Jordan (deceased), Delaney Davis, Aaron Cook, Jarod Jordan). MaaMaa was happiest when she was holding one of her great-grandchildren (Eleanor Davis, Brynn Jordan, Blayne Jordan and Michael “Tree” Jordan, III). Mattie always had a special place in her heart for her former daughter-in-law, Tina Jordan, who remained a close friend to the end. Until we meet again, may God hold you in the palm of His hand. We take comfort knowing MaaMaa has been made whole and is resting in God’s hand for eternity.
Arrangements under the direction of Centuries Memorial Funeral Home, Shreveport, LA.
