On Saturday, January 16, 2021, Neva Frances Dickerson of Garland, TX, passed peacefully from life to meet her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. She also joins her beloved husband, SW Dickerson who passed on to Glory on Wednesday, December 16th, 2020. She leaves behind her sons, Bryan (Kim) Dickerson, of Garland, TX, and Blair (Patty) Dickerson, of Richmond, VA, Grandchildren Joshua (Kariss) Dickerson of Dallas, TX, Jonathan (Edna) Dickerson of Richardson, TX, Austin Dickerson and Brianna Dickerson of Richmond, VA. She also leaves behind many nieces and nephews.
Neva was born Neva Frances Jackson, on December 8, 1932, in Smyrna, TX. She was the sixth child of Claude Elmer Jackson and Winnie Moulder Jackson, who preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by all her siblings and their spouses, Marlin (Ruth) Jackson, Monard (Dorothy) Jackson, Wayne (Rose) Jackson, Loretta (Homer)Pruitt, and Dorothy Faye McDaniel. The family lived in the Smyrna, Texas community, where Neva attended elementary school and then moved to Atlanta, Texas where she attended high school, graduating in 1950. Neva worked in several places in the area until the family moved to Shreveport, LA in 1956. There she worked in several office jobs, eventually ending up at First National Bank. While working there she was befriended by Dorothy (Dickerson) Balla. Dorothy’s younger brother, SW had recently returned from service with the US Army in Germany, and Neva was introduced to him as he tried to play a practical joke on Dorothy and Neva as they returned from lunch one day. It was love at first sight and they began dating in March of 1961. They married on September 22, 1961, and were together for the next 59+ years.
Neva and SW had two sons, Bryan Wayne, born in November 1963, and Blair Weyland, born in March 1965. The family lived in Shreveport until February of 1967, when SW transferred to Dallas, TX, to work for Mobil Oil Corporation where they would live until they both retired in 1992. After the boys were in school, Neva worked as a secretary for Eastwood Christian Church, where they had attended since moving to Texas. They were both very active in the church. After retirement, they bought a home in Hot Springs Village, Arkansas, where they lived for 14 years. While there they enjoyed time with friends and worked together to begin Hot Springs Village Christian Church. They also enjoyed taking many trips during their retirement years all over the US. Traveling to visit the National Parks, and to New England in the fall were some of their favorite adventures. They eventually moved back to Atlanta, TX for a few years, finally returning to the Garland, TX area.
Both during their years raising their family in the Dallas area and after they returned, they were ardent Texas Ranger’s fans. As a matter of fact, their very first date was to a baseball game between the Cleveland Indians and the Shreveport Sports—an Indian’s farm team. This was a love they passed on to their children and grandchildren.
A graveside service will be held in Shreveport, LA at Forest Park West Cemetery where all of the Dickerson Family are buried. The service will be officiated by Craig Sanborn, a longtime family friend, and former pastor of Eastern Hills Church of Christ in Garland, TX.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Mayberry Gardens Assisted Living and Memory Care in her name. Her family would like to honor all those who have cared for Neva and SW so well these past couple of years and especially this past year during the Pandemic.
