Born in Nashville, Georgia, to Corine and Joe Odom, Raymond grew up with strong values that would shape the steady, principled man he became. He served honorably in the United States Navy, four years of active duty followed by three years in the Navy Reserves where he learned discipline, resilience, and a lifelong sense of duty to others.
Raymond spent his career as a crew leader at International Paper Company, where his calm leadership and work ethic earned the respect of everyone around him. But retirement didn’t slow him down. He continued serving his community by volunteering at Sci-Port Discovery Center, where he lent his hands and heart to building and repairing science exhibits quietly helping spark curiosity and wonder in the minds of countless children.
Faith was the foundation of Raymond’s life. He taught Sunday school for many years, not only speaking about grace and compassion but living it out in everything he did. He was the kind of man who asked for nothing and gave everything of his time, his skill, his wisdom, and his love.
Raymond had a deep love for working with his hands. Whether it was fine woodworking, reading books, or crafting intricate hobby planes, he found joy in patience and precision. His creations reflected the same care and steadiness that defined him as a husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 64 years, Shirley Odom; his sons Tony Odom (SanDee) and Andy Odom (Cathy); and his cherished granddaughters, Ashley Odom Thomasson and Hanna Odom. He also leaves behind his siblings Ava Nell Browning, Patricia Dean, John "Dub" Odom, Don Odom, and Jerry Odom.
Raymond was preceded in death by his parents, Joe and Corine Odom, and his sisters, Carol Jean Pagels and Marcelle Wetherington.
