He attended the University of Connecticut before enlisting in the U.S. Coast Guard. After his Coast Guard service he attended and graduated from Bowling Green State University. While at Bowling Green he met and married the love of his life, Shirley May Dunham of Toledo, Ohio.
He began his working career with Arthur Andersen and Co. in Houston, Texas. While there he earned his CPA designation. After working in Corpus Christi, Texas and Enid, Oklahoma, he came to Shreveport and worked for Crystal Oil Co. and then Franks Petroleum Co. from which he retired after 26 years.
He was a proud member of the National Rifle Association and Caddo Rifle and Pistol Club for many years. He was also a Mason for over 50 years.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Ethel and William; his brothers, William and David; and his wife, Shirley. He is survived by his four children, Richard M., Jr. (Karen) of Mandeville, LA, Keith of Shreveport, Sandra Weidlein (Dan) of Perth, Australia, and Sharyn Gustafson (John) of Shreveport; and five grandchildren, Ryan and Katie Gunther, Stephen Clark, Derek and Kyle Weidlein; and one great-grandchild, Sawyer Elizabeth Gunther.
His favorite pass times were deer and squirrel hunting, with a little fishing thrown in. He was most proud of having introduced two of his grandsons to deer hunting.
Funeral services for Mr. Gunther will be held at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, January 27, 2018, at Centuries Memorial Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to the American Diabetic Association or the American Heart Association.
