Samuel Mitchell, 86, passed away surrounded by family Saturday morning, September 15, 2018, in Shreveport, Louisiana following a brief illness. Samuel was born in Villa Rica, Georgia on May 4, 1932 to Lemuel David Mitchell and Mary Ella Defoor.
Samuel married his wife of 64 years, Margaret Joyce Holloway, on July 10th, 1954 upon his return from serving his country in the Korean War as a Sergeant First Class in the 180th Infantry. That same year, Samuel began his employment with General Motors in Atlanta, Georgia. During this time, he also proudly served as a deacon at Fullerville Baptist Church for many years in Villa Rica. In 1982, Samuel relocated with his family to Shreveport, continuing his 33-year career with General Motors.
Most important to Samuel was his faith in Jesus Christ. Throughout his life, he was guided by this faith in devoted obedience and service to the Lord. This faith was seen in the way Samuel interacted with everyone, especially his family. Our “Papa” loved nothing more than spending time with his granddaughters and great-grandchildren, travelling the country with his wife, and spending time in conversation on the back porch with his son, Mickey.
Samuel is survived by his wife, Margaret Joyce Mitchell; son, Samuel Mickey Mitchell and wife, Denise; grandchildren, Amanda Michelle Smith, Haylee Mitchell Crawford and husband, Patrick; great-grandchildren, Alayna Noelle Smith, Sloane Elizabeth Crawford; and sister, Peggy Mitchell McCullough; and several nieces and nephews.
Samuel was preceded in death by his identical twin brother, Daniel Mitchell, and sister, Jane Wix Mobbs.
A private funeral service for the family will be held on Tuesday, September 18th. Samuel will be laid to rest at Veterans’ Field of Honor in Centuries Memorial Park. The family will receive visitors on Monday, September 17th from 5:00 to 7:00 pm in the Chapel at Centuries Memorial Funeral Home.
The family would like to thank the staff at Willis Knighton Pierremont for their care and compassion throughout Samuel’s final days.
