She is preceded in death by her mother, Iva Dell Byrd Matthews; father, Pinkney B. Matthews; brothers, Pinkney B. Matthews, Jr., and Arthur F. Matthews; and daughter, Stephanie “Kaye” Hensley; and beloved pet Boxer, Miss “Coco” Delight.
Sydney is survived by her husband of fifty years, Ronnie L. Adams; her five children, Rhonda Adams Milano of Cedar Hill, Texas, Christopher Jason Adams and wife,Teresa, Daryl Matthews Adams and wife, Regina, Shannon Adams Carman, and Sommer Adams Graham and husband, Marshall, all of Shreveport/Bossier City, Louisiana; grandchildren, Brittney Milano and Jason Milano of Cedar Hill, Texas, Casey Adams, Christina Adams, Cody Adams of Clarksville, Tennessee, Ayden Carman and Gibson Graham of Shreveport/Bossier City, Louisiana, Megan Everett, Kaliegh Everett, Madeline Everett and Ryne Everett of Keithville, Louisiana; one great grandson, Nathan Magar of Cedar Hill, Texas and “The child that never talked back”, her beloved pet Boxer, Pepper Ann Adams of Bossier City, Louisiana.
She was married to Ronnie L. Adams December 30th 1959 after dating for only nine days. Our Mama was the most extraordinary woman we’ve ever known. She opened her heart and her home to any friend or family in need. Through all of our hard times in life “mama” was our solid rock to lean on. Psalms 73:26 gave our mother the strength to be our rock. “When my skin sags and my bones get brittle, God is rock-firm and faithful”.
The following is to honor Sydney Matthews Adams; the visitation will be at Centuries Memorial Funeral Home, 8801 Mansfield Rd. on Thursday, August 5, 2010. The funeral service will be at Summer Grove Baptist Church on Friday, August 6, 2010, at 10:00 a.m. with the graveside service following at Hill Crest Memorial Park in Haughton, Louisiana. She requested that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Heart of Hope for Women, American Cancer Society, Christus Schumpert Hospice or the Caddo Career and Technology Center Foundation.
Serving as Pallbearers are Bill Long, Larry Rowe, Jerry Gray, Don Smith, Charles Beard, Frank Merritt, and Honorary Pallbearers are the Men of Bill Long’s Sunday School Class of Summer Grove Baptist Church and Southwest Shreveport Rotary Club.
Mama and the family wanted to thank the doctors, nurses and staff of the Christus Cancer Treatment Center, with a special appreciation to Dr. Bonoil, Kate Young and the following nurses on the 6th floor oncology unit: Tammy Chambers, Tomeka Palmer, Andrea Walters, and her special friend from Kenya, Collins Dera. Thank you to Christus Home Health and Christus Hospice Service s for their loving care of our beloved mom.
