Tom was born April 19, 1943, in Pella, Iowa, to the late James David Nimmo and Mary Isabel Thomas Nimmo, and grew up in Monroe, Iowa. He was a U.S. Army veteran, having served six years which included one combat tour in Vietnam. Tom separated from the Army as a Staff Sergeant and afterward made his home in Shreveport, where he married and raised his family and began a long and dedicated career with AT&T.
After retiring from AT&T, Tom pursued the hobby he loved best — garage selling, or as he liked to call it, "Junkin'." He spent every weekend at the Greenwood Flea Market among many friends and acquaintances. It was never really about the things he would buy. It was the adventure of the hunt, the possibility that the next garage sale might hold treasure. He found it more often than most, because he knew how to look and he arrived well before others. Tom also loved to garden, was an avid LSU Tigers fan, and on Sundays rooted for the Cowboys and the Saints.
What Tom loved even more than a good find was a good visit. He was a storyteller, a talker, a man who never met a conversation he wanted to cut short. Family and friends came away from time with him feeling lighter than when they arrived. He will always be remembered as a kind, loving, and funny man.
Tom was preceded in death by his parents, James David Nimmo and Mary Isabel Thomas Nimmo, and by his former wife and mother of his children, Joan Barbour Nimmo.
He is survived by Penny Nimmo; his children, Philip (Julie) Nimmo, Charlie (Kristine) Nimmo, and "Katie" Mary Kathleen Nimmo; his brother, Roger (Carol) Nimmo; and his sister, Kathy (John) Nimmo Webster. He also has nine grandchildren — Thomas (Abby) Nimmo, John Nimmo, David Nimmo, Andrew Nimmo, Chase Nimmo, Cooper Nimmo, Elizabeth Martin, Dawson Martin and Luke Hayden — one great-granddaughter, Genevieve Therese Nimmo; many nieces and nephews; and numerous loving relatives and friends.
Visitation will be held Saturday, August 8, 2026, from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. at Centuries Memorial Funeral Home, 8801 Mansfield Road, Shreveport, Louisiana, with the funeral service following from 2:00 to 3:00 p.m. A private interment service will be held later for the family.
