Wesley Farrell Southern passed away on Thursday August 15, 2019 at the age of 80 in Shreveport, Louisiana. He was born March 29, 1939 in Shreveport to Clarence and Maxine Southern. In his youth, he enjoyed swimming with the Cedar Grove Swim Team and gymnastics. He graduated from Byrd High School in 1957 before honorably serving his country in the United States Navy for four years as a cook. After serving his commitment in the Navy, he met and married the love of his life, Gay, and started a beautiful family.
Wesley then returned to his natural gift of mechanics and began his career repairing typewriters, calculators, fax machines, and copiers, which later turned into his own small business. He was also an employee for Caddo Parish School Board for 36 years as a bus driver. During that time, he served on the Board of the Louisiana Bus Drivers’ Association and served as President of the Caddo Parish Bus Drivers’ Association.
He was a devoted husband and father, who spent quality time coaching baseball, playing board games, and other activities. He showed his family the importance of faith in God by being actively involved in his church. Wesley was the Music Director for 30 years at Countryside Baptist Church, where he also served as a deacon and treasurer.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife Gay Southern; son, James Southern and wife Renee; daughter, Donna Niette and Shane Howard; five grandchildren, Savannah Niette, Joshua Southern, Shelby Southern, Emily Southern, and Makinsey Southern; and two great grandchildren, Ryleigh Niette and Ruston Niette. His grandchildren and great grandchildren were one of his greatest blessing and joy in life and he will be missed tremendously. He is preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Geraldine Bonnett.
The family will receive guest on Sunday, August 18, 2019 from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM at Centuries Memorial Funeral Home. A celebration of life will occur Monday, August 19, 2019 at 11:00 AM at Countryside Baptist Church, 11800 Mansfield Rd, Keithville, Louisiana with a visitation beginning before the service at 10:00 AM. An interment will occur Monday, August 19, 2019 at Centuries Memorial Park. Pastor Randall Johnson of Countryside Baptist Church will be officiating the services
