William Henry Harrison Slack, a long-time Shreveport resident, died at home on January 25, 2013, with close family at bedside. Bill was a man of the world who also kept up his responsibilities to family and country. He was born on August 4, 1927, in Shongaloo, LA, the fifth of seven children of Milton Albert and Mary Alice Slack.
After serving in the US Navy during WWII and attending school at the Texas School of Mines and Louisiana Tech University, Bill went to work for Geophysical Service Inc. as a geophysicist. A postcard from Bill was a glimpse into a faraway land. He showed us how far a big smile and a scratch golf game could go as he built business connections in countries around the world. His bachelorhood came undone at age 36 when he married Rita Zimmermann, a beautiful Canadian, who served as assistant to the Ambassador of Canada to Brazil. Bill will also be missed by all the duffers he knew as the long-time Manager of Querbes Park Golf Course.
Bill is pre-deceased by his beloved wife Rita, and is survived by son Michael Slack and wife Terri, son James Slack, grandchildren Meghan and Nathan, sister Mary Jo Grayson and brother James Slack, and many nephews and nieces.
Terri and her sister Leah Escudé were especially appreciated by Bill for their loving care during his final illness. Visitation will be on Saturday, February 2, 2013, at Centuries Memorial Park from 1 to 3 pm, followed by a family graveside memorial service.
