

NIEFORTH, Angus Walter, P.O.1st Class (Retired) - 71, of Enfield passed away peacefully Monday, April 5, 2010 in the Colchester Regional Hospital, Truro, following a courageous two year battle with cancer. Born in Lantz, he was a son of the late Guy and Elizabeth (Byng) Nieforth. He joined the Royal Canadian Navy in 1957 and retired in 1987, serving on the HMCS Sault Ste. Marie, Crusader, Swansea, Yukon, Cape Scott, Kootenay, Quapelle, and Annapolis, and at Scotian, Shearwater, Subronone, CDLS Washington, United Nations Peacekeeping - Damacus, Syria, and Greenwood. Following his time in the military, he was employed for ten years as the Provincial Service Officer at Nova Scotia Command. He worked tirelessly for the Royal Canadian Legion, serving in many capacities, including being the past president of the Montgomery Branch 133. For his efforts, he received the Meritorous Service Award and the Palm Leaf Award. Angus was a former member of the Fox Hollow Golf Club, Stewiacke. He was a treasurer for the East Hants Liberal Association and a member of the Chiefs and P.O.’s Association. He was also active in establishing the Emergency Measures Organization within his community. His passions included hunting, fishing, golfing, and gardening. He is survived by wife of 45 years, Sheila (MacDowell); sons, Mark (Angela), Elmsdale, Stephen (Andrea), Toronto; grandchildren, Courtney and Christopher Nieforth; sisters, Myrene (Vaughn) Horne, Enfield, Ruth Carroll, Dartmouth; and numerous nieces and nephews. Predeceased by brother, Myron and sister Maxine. Cremation has taken place under the direction of Ettinger Funeral Home, Shubenacadie. No visitation by request. A legion memorial service will take place at 10:45am before an11am funeral mass, Friday, April 9 in St. Bernard's Church, Enfield, Father Andrew Rembarczyk presiding. Burial will take place in the St. Bernard's Columbarium. A reception will follow at the Enfield Legion. Special thanks to Dr. Mulroy and Dr. Morzycki at the Cancer Centre, Dr. Bruce Montgomery and his secretary Lynn at the Elmsdale Medical Centre, and especially the doctors, sitters, and staff at Colchester Regional Hospital.
