
James Lee Whitt, 71, of Sikeston, died June 5, 2011 at the Missouri Delta Medical Center in Sikeston. Born February 5, 1940 in Doddsville, MS, to the late Clarence and Olliebell Jones Whitt, he was employed as an engineer for Gonnella Bakery in Schaumburg, IL, before moving to Sikeston. He was a member of the YMCA and the Murray Lane Baptist Church in Sikeston.
On June 19, 1961, in Lexington, MS, he married Leverta Freeman, who survives of the home.
Other survivors include: one son, James Lee Whitt, Jr., of Chicago, IL; two daughters, Benita B. Gill and Stacy Hoyt, both of Chicago; two brothers, Clarence Whitt of Pace, MS and Raymond Jones of Cleveland, OH; and four sisters, Mattie Lacy of Greenwood, MS, Novella Marshall of Detroit, MI, Charlie Mae Newman and Irene Landfair, both of Hayti. Also surviving are seven grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one son, Donald Ray Whitt; and three sisters.
Visitation will begin at 10:00am on Saturday, June 11, at the Nunnelee Funeral Chapel, where services will follow at 11:00am, with the Rev. Kelley Grubbs, pastor of the Murray Lane Baptist Church, officiating.
Burial will follow at the Garden of Memories Cemetery. Pallbearers will be:
Russ Dial, Cecil Owen, Jackie Ray Watkins, Dossy Nance, Bill Nance and Harold Williams. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Murray Lane Baptist Church Men’s Sunday School Class.
