Peggy Tatum Greer, 97, passed away Wednesday, February 24, 2021 at La Bonne Maison Assisted Living Center in Sikeston, MO. with her three sons at her bedside. She had lived for the most part of the past seven years as a resident of La Bonne Maison Assisted Living in Sikeston. She was born November 10, 1923 in Kennett, Missouri to the late Bernie Harris Tatum and Esther Walker Tatum. She was a graduate of Kennett High School and Southeast Missouri State University followed by teaching in Kennett and later working in St. Louis just after the end of WWII. She was proud to have been the first employee hired by Al Fleishman and Robert Hillard in 1946 when they formed “Fleishman Hillard”, that has grown into a world-wide public relations firm.
On January 3, 1948 she married G. B. Greer III at the First Christian Church in Kennett and together, had a marriage of 39 years until G.B.’s death in 1987, all except the first year, living in Sikeston. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Sikeston. She was also a fifty plus year member of PEO, Chapter HB. Peggy was an avid bridge player and was very well respected in that regard. She spent many years actively playing golf and tennis, travelled extensively with her husband and later with several very special lady friends. Peggy always greatly enjoyed the frequent visits to Sikeston by her sons, their wives, grandchildren and later two great grandsons.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by her mother and father, sisters Francis Brenner and JoAnn Rose and brother Jim Tatum. She is survived by three sons, G. Barry (Susan) Greer IV of Houston, Texas; David Tatum (Elizabeth) Greer of Athens, Georgia; John Calvin Greer of Sikeston. Also surviving are granddaughters Alecia (Cade) Slaughter of Athens; Emily (Andrae) Lewis and Lyndsey (Joshua) Kinninger, both of Houston; Meredith Greer, who attends the University of Arkansas; and two great grandsons, Cameron and Jordan Lewis.
The Family would like to acknowledge the support given to Peggy by the Staff at La Bonne Maison for the past seven years, to Rebecca Hill for her years of helping attend to her needs and especially to the generous caring by Alice Duke. The final days of Peggy’s life were also lovingly attended to by Crown Hospice.
