Born on December 23, 1945, in West Palm Beach, Florida, Roger was the only child of the late Durward Norman Manwaring and Hazel Karraker Manwaring. He grew up in Terre Haute, Indiana and graduated from Wiley High School in 1964. He attended David Lipscomb College in Nashville, TN until he enlisted in the United States Army in 1966 during the Vietnam War. He served in Kaiserslautern, Germany as Comptroller, attaining the rank of Specialist E-5.
While in Germany he met the love of his life, Pamela Sue Baker, at a Bible study in 1968. Pam was visiting her brother and sister-in-law who were also stationed in Kaiserslautern. Roger and Pam were married in 1969 at Shady Acres Church of Christ in Sikeston, MO. They had one son, Roger Jr.
After his military service, Roger and his family lived in south Florida and Memphis, TN where he was Sales Promotions Manager for Parts Industries Corporation. He later moved to become general manager of O & A Auto Parts in Sikeston. Roger and Pam owned and operated both Popcorn Corner and Pizza Inn. Roger later became Communication Officer for Miner Police Department until his retirement.
Roger was a member of Shady Acres Church of Christ in Sikeston where, for decades, you could routinely find him on Sundays leading singing. Roger had a passion for emergency services, serving as Deputy Director of Scott County Emergency Management, Assistant Fire Chief for the City of Miner Fire Department, and Assistant Fire Chief for Scott County Rural Fire Protection District. At the time of his passing, he was Administrator for Scott County Rural Fire Protection District. He was a very proud recipient of the Missouri State Highway Patrol Honorary Trooper Award, which is the highest award given to a civilian by the Missouri Highway Patrol.
Roger was predeceased by his wife, Pam, in February.
Roger is survived by one son, Roger D. Manwaring, Jr. (Linda); granddaughters Katherine and Ella; sister-in-law Brenda Baker; niece Heather Hopper (Brent); nephews Shawn Baker (Lisa) and Kevin Baker; and close cousin Jan Williams (Conrad). He will be deeply missed by all who knew him, but his memory will live on in the hearts of those he touched and in the stories of their shared experiences. He was known for his deep knowledge of cars, his decades of leadership in emergency services, and his frequent uttering of phrases like “What the Sam Hill” and “Oh forevermore”.
A visitation will be held on Monday, April 28, 2025, from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Shady Acres Church of Christ in Sikeston, Missouri where the funeral service will be held on Tuesday, April 29, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. with interment following at Missouri Veterans Cemetery in Bloomfield, MO with full military honors at 1:00 p.m.
