Alice A. Walecka (Capaccio) passed away peacefully in her home at the Riderwood Community in Silver Spring, Maryland on February 11, 2020, at the age of 101. Alice was born May 28, 1918 and was a devout Catholic. Growing up in Meriden, Connecticut her childhood dream was to travel the world. Between her career with the Navy Department, State Department, National Security Agency, and her marriage to Wally (Norman E. Walecka) a member of the US Air Force, that dream was realized. She spent 7 years in South America, 6 years in Asia, and 11 years in Europe with her husband and five children. This life experience helped her see the world, not as bits and pieces plagued by differences, but as an integrated whole. She often remarked that “No matter where I am in this world I feel at home.”
Alice loved living at Riderwood and enjoyed singing in the choir, playing bridge, dancing to the Latin beat, and enjoying dinner conversations. She could often be seen briskly walking and happily greeting fellow residents.
Alice is survived by her five children, daughter Christine Haapala (Kenneth), son Christopher Walecka (Jolie), daughter Jan Walecka, daughter Lisette Staal (David) and son Tony Walecka (Stephanie); 8 grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren. Alice was preceded in death by her husband, Norman E. Walecka (Two Rivers, Wisconsin), and 11 sisters and brothers. Her family benefitted from Alice’s adventurous spirit, experiences and insights. They take comfort in knowing that she is home.
