He graduated from Thomas Jefferson University, Philadelphia, PA in 1972 as a Psychiatrist; and joined the NIMH as a Medical Director at Saint Elizabeth’s Hospital at Washington DC. He was initially the Medical Director for Area D CMHC and remained there for the next 25 years. He then became Division Chief of the O’Malley DIVISION; a new position as a manager of a 278 bed unit that was developed with the idea of lowering the patient population to a less restrictive environment. After his retirement from Saint Elizabeth’s he later became the Physician in Charge at the Franklin Square Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland. He also became the Clinical Instructor and Clinical Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at Georgetown University Hospital from 1992 to 2005 and at George Washington University Hospital Department of Psychiatry where he taught Medical students and Psychiatric Residents. He worked there as Clinical Assistant Professor from 1993 to 2009. He became Medical Director of the BBH (Baltimore Behavioral Health) Baltimore, Maryland for 5 years. Everyone that worked with him or was treated by him called him “Dr. O”. That was a beloved nickname that will carry on with his legacy. His family originated from Vasc San Sebastian, Spain. He loved his work, his job; and most of all, his family. In lieu of flowers, Dr. Andres requested that donations be made to St. Jude in his memory.
