Angela Oakley January 26, 1971 – June 5, 2015 Angela Oakley, 44, died June 5, 2015 with her mother and brother by her side after living with breast cancer for more than a year. She was the daughter of the late Gerald and Joyce Oakley of Durham, NC and the sister of Lee Oakley of Dallas, TX. A proud graduate of Northern High School in Durham, NC and UNC Chapel Hill, she pursued a career in journalism. Angela spent more than 20 years working at television stations in Raleigh-Durham, NC, Charleston, WV, Baltimore, MD and Washington, DC. She covered stories including 9/11, The State of the Union, and an Honor Flight of veterans visiting the World War II Memorial. Angela was hitting a great stride in her life; she bought her first home, bought a new car and got involved in events in her Washington, DC community. Her cancer diagnosis took her by surprise, but she never flinched. She never neglected anyone or anything she believed in. Even though her body was breaking down, Angela’s spirit stayed intact. She never lost track of her mission in life, and that was to care for people and pets. Even during chemo, she continued to work—always with a smile on her face—and she engaged in all of the things that made her happy. Angela had a deep understanding of what the diagnosis meant, but she had an even deeper understanding of what her mission in life was, and she never wavered. She focused on her family and her friends, making those bonds even stronger. She made time for friends, even when she wasn't feeling well. This was something that came easy to her because she had spent her life perfecting it. Despite being an Emmy Award-winning journalist and working in one ofthe harshest businesses, her biggest accomplishment was not in TV, it was her character. She always found time to think of others, no matter what was happening in her life. Angela was a kind soul who had a love for people, animals and knitting. She devoted a lot of her time to City Dogs Rescue in Washington, DC. Her goal was to get all of the dogs adopted; especially the ones that had been in foster care the longest. She loved every single dog and every single animal she ever came across. A visitation is planned for Monday, June 8, 2015 from 4pm-8pm at Hines-Rinaldi Funeral Home, 11800 New Hampshire Avenue, Silver Spring, MD. A funeral service will be held at the same location on Tuesday, June 9, 2015 at 11am. Services in Durham, NC will be held later in the week. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Angela Oakley’s name to the City Dogs Rescue or Capital Caring Hospice.
