There are some people who enter our lives as colleagues and, somewhere along the way, become family. Arindam da was one of them. I knew him for almost twenty years—from the second floor of Techno Complex, the TRG floor, to countless RFPs and journeys across India and the U.S. What stays with me is how deeply he cared for people. With him, a colleague became a friend, and the friend became an elder brother.
Dallas holds memories—visits to our home, food, laughter, music, dancing and late-night conversations. Once he told me, “The way you cook and feed me is the way a mother feeds. When I grow old, I’ll buy a house near yours so I can come and eat every day.” We laughed then; today, that memory hurts. On many weekend nights, often during his drinking sessions, he would call wanting to cook. I would guide him over the phone, and he would proudly say he had “almost replicated” my recipe. I would give anything for one more such call.
Troy, my fur baby, held a place in his heart, and the feeling was mutual. I will never forget the snake-catching episode—while the rest of us kept our distance, he had already taken charge. Fearless and irrepressibly alive—that was Arindam da.
He was a rock music man; Rabindrasangeet was not his thing, which naturally meant I tortured him with Tagore whenever I could. And now I turn to Tagore to say goodbye. Forgive me, Arindam da—even now, you have not escaped Rabindranath.
Barely a month ago, I asked if I could use his name as a professional reference for my new job. He replied: “Are you crazy? And are you asking me that?” I will never forget it. As if twenty years of friendship had already answered the question. Today, it feels sacred.
Wherever you are, Arindam da, stay well. May there be laughter, friends, good food and all the rock music you want. Your family, your friends, Troy and I will miss you deeply. There will always be a place for you at our table and in our hearts. You were loved, and you will be remembered endlessly.
