

On the evening of December 25, 2016 Dr. Bernard (Bernie) Hodinko, age eighty-eight, passed away from natural causes while being comforted by family members at Washington Adventist Hospital in Langley Park, Maryland. Bernie was born on April 26, 1928 in Connellsville PA and raised in Uniontown PA. He served in the U.S. Army in Korea for two years then ultimately settled in Maryland for the remainder of his life.
Dr. Hodinko, Emeritus Professor of Counseling and Student Development and former Vice President of Student Life at the American University, received the Bachelor of Science degree from California University (PA), The Master of Arts degree from West Virginia University, and Doctorate from The Pennsylvania State University. His graduate study focused on counselling and student affairs administration in higher education.
He taught on the junior high school, senior high school, community college and university levels and worked as a member of the central administration of the University of Maryland, Montgomery Community College, and The American University. He authored a number of books and articles in his field and supervised, as Dissertation Committee Chairman, the research for more than 150 doctoral dissertations.
Bernie had a passion for sports and was an avid tennis and golf player and also had a love of the arts. He brought these interests together by attended many sporting events and music and theater performances at the University of Maryland. Bernie had a variety of hobbies which included gardening, woodworking and stamp collecting.
Bernie is fondly remembered and respected as a father, grandfather, educator, and friend who guided, supported, and touched so many lives.
Bernie was preceded in death by his parents Anne Marie and Andrew Hodinko and by his brother Robert G. Hodinko. Bernie is survived by his former wife Sue Hodinko, daughter Alexis Black, son Jeffrey Hodinko along with his daughter in law Sheri and grandchildren, Ryan, Kyle, Scott, Natalie, and Julia Hodinko.
