Burton Bloomberg passed away on December 7, 2025, at the age of 98 years old. Burt was born on August 12, 1927, in the Bronx, NY, to Charles and Lillian Bloomberg. He grew up in Queens with his sister, Roberta (who preceded him in death), and he attended NYU for 2 years before being drafted into the Army during World War II. He served mainly in Italy, achieving the rank of Sergeant, until his honorable discharge in 1947. After returning home, he completed his studies at NYU and then attended Columbia University Law School, where he graduated with his law degree in 1952. He met Ina Freedlander at a dance one evening, and they married in 1956. They eventually moved to Washington, DC, where they settled down and raised their family. Burt worked for most of his career at HUD (US Dept of Housing and Urban Development) where he rose to the position of Associate General Counsel in the Senior Executive Service. He and Ina had a close and loving marriage for 50 years, until Ina’s death in 2006. They greatly enjoyed traveling and were able to visit many places together, including Italy, France, England, and Israel. Burt was warm and funny, quick with a “Dad joke,” and a real family man. He had a passion for photography, which he was able to practice on his travels and at home, with (way too many) family photos. He was an avid collector of old cameras, and popped into camera stores often to chat with other collectors. He also enjoyed golf and tennis well into his older years. Burt and Ina raised four children in Silver Spring, MD, in a bustling household full of humor and healthy debate. They instilled a passion for education and knowledge - Burt always said that one of his greatest achievements was putting all of his children through college. He and Ina were loving and supportive parents, who encouraged their children to pursue their own paths in life.
Burt is survived by his four children: Steven Bloomberg, Sharon Bloomberg (husband: Don Zero), Fay Dorsett (husband: Domenic Dorsett), and Janet Bloomberg (husband: Sean Brady), and five grandchildren: Jonah Santiago, Annabelle Dorsett, Naomi Dorsett, Ben Dorsett, and Ian Brady.
In Burt’s later years, after Ina’s passing, he found a wonderful companion in an old friend, Sonya (Sonny) Bergman. They spent their last 15 years together, traveling, socializing, and staying active. Sonny (who recently passed away) became a part of our family, and we miss her.
We’d like to especially thank Dad’s caregiver, Fre, who was by his side for years. She was truly an angel, enriching his life to the end, and we are eternally grateful for her.
