Derek Leonard Rockett was born on June 4, 1973, at Howard University Hospital in Washington, D.C. He passed away on April 15, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of love, resilience, and deep family connection. Derek was a devoted son, father, brother, and friend whose presence touched all who knew him.
Derek spent his formative years in Silver Spring, Maryland, where he attended Jackson Road Elementary School, White Oak Middle School, and Springbrook High School. His childhood was filled with joy, adventure, and time outdoors riding his bike, going to the swimming pool, playing basketball, and creating memories that would stay with him for a lifetime.
A gifted athlete, Derek was a talented soccer player who competed on Montgomery County Select teams throughout middle school. His remarkable footwork and natural skill never failed to impress. From childhood through adulthood, Derek was surrounded by siblings, cousins, and close friends, forming bonds that endured throughout his life. Friendship meant everything to Derek, and those relationships remained one of the most cherished and defining aspects of who he was.
After graduating from college with a degree in Computer Information Systems, Derek built a successful career in project management. For more than two decades, he served as a Project Manager at the United States Patent and Trademark Office. He was well known for his strong problem-solving abilities, professionalism, and unwavering dedication to his work. Derek earned not only the respect but also the genuine affection of his colleagues, treating everyone he encountered with kindness, sincerity, and a warm smile.
Above all else, Derek’s greatest pride and joy were his two daughters, Bethany Rockett and Megan Rockett. There was nothing he would not do to make them smile, to support them, or to ensure they had what they needed. He showed up for them consistently present, engaged, and steadfast in his love.
Derek believed in teaching his daughters responsibility, punctuality, efficiency, and the importance of making good decisions. Even more importantly, he wanted them to always feel how deeply they were loved, admired, and cherished. Whether attending first days of school, cheering at sporting events, supporting cheerleading competitions, or applauding school plays, Derek made it a priority to be there.
Derek attended Sligo Seventh-day Adventist Church throughout his childhood and adult life. He faithfully brought his daughters to church and encouraged their involvement in church activities, including the children’s choir. Derek expressed his faith through genuine warmth and encouragement, often sharing uplifting messages and scripture with his daughters and loved ones. His heartfelt desire was for them to always feel surrounded by Christ’s everlasting love and hope.
Derek’s close relationships brought joy, laughter, and countless treasured memories. He is survived by his mother, Elma M. La Touche; his father, Leonard R. Rockett; his stepmother, Julia Lara; his daughters, Bethany M. Rockett and Megan N. Rockett; his sisters, Nicole Rockett and Ayana Rockett; and his nephew, Matthew Mendez. He also leaves behind many aunts, uncles, cousins, friends, colleagues, and acquaintances who deeply appreciated his warmth, humor, and kindness.
Derek will be remembered for his strength of character, quiet determination, affability, and, most of all, his sense of humor. His memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
