Dorothy DuPuis Mackin was born March 8, 1917 in Warrenton, Georgia to Seth Elroy and Ethel Murray DuPuis. She graduated from Wesleyan College in Macon, GA in 1938 and returned the following year as Instructor of Physical Education. She taught there for four years. In 1942, she became Director of Recreational Activities at Hunter Air Force Base in Savannah, GA where she met her Connecticut Yankee future husband, Don Mackin. They were married in 1945 when Don returned from 2 ½ years of overseas service. They eventually settled in Bethesda, MD where their two children, Donnelle and Derril, were born.
In 1960, Dottie joined the staff of The American University. She served as Freshman Counselor, then Director of Transfer and Graduate Admissions, and finally as Special Assistant to the Dean of Admissions and Financial Aid. In 1973, she received the Outstanding Staff Award for outstanding performance. She retired in 1979 after 19 years of service.
After retirement, Dottie became active in her church, Concord-St. Andrews United Methodist Church in Bethesda, MD., serving as Lay Leader, President of the United Methodist Women and on numerous committees
Dottie moved to Riderwood Village in May, 2001 where she participated in sports, water aerobics, played shuffle board, was a member of the Acoustic Cats Ukulele Club, played in the Wii bowling league (proudly achieving a perfect game) and was an active member of the Riderwood Protestant Church.
She was the proud grandmother of four grandsons – Matthew and Seth Lyons and Seth and Josh Mackin, and great-grandmother to five great-grandchildren Diana, Marissa, Gabrielle, William and Jacob.
