Dorothy B. Waring
Dorothy B. Waring peacefully departed this life on Tuesday, May 12, 2026. She was a wonderful wife, mother, and sister who was always there when we needed her. She also had many friends, was a well-loved member of her church, and was active in her Brightwood community in N.W. Washington, D.C.
Dorothy (or Dot as she was affectionately called) was born on January 21, 1933 on a farm in Enfield, North Carolina to Charlie Gaines Brinkley and Annie Maggie Brinkley. She was the fifth of ten children.
When the time came for her to attend high school, Dorothy moved to Washington, D.C. and attended Dunbar High School. Dorothy was exceptionally skilled in mathematics. After graduation, she pursued a career in the federal government. She started as a typist at the Department of Treasury in Washington, D.C, but quickly moved up to a position as a computer programmer at the David Taylor Model Basin in Bethesda, Maryland.
Dorothy moved to the N.E. quadrant of Washington, D.C. and it was there she met a young college student named Alvin Waring. Alvin was in the ROTC and studying Electrical Engineering. They dated and after Alvin graduated from Howard University, they were married on July 31, 1960. From this union they had two children - Marcia and Alvin, Jr.
When Dorothy retired, she didn’t just become a stay-at-home mom. She was active in her children’s school and PTA events, and her church Sodality (Nativity Catholic Church). She also helped her husband with his real estate business. Every summer Alvin and Dot would pack up the station wagon and the family and go to the beach in Wildwood New Jersey. Later, the family would spend their summers at their house in Annapolis, Maryland. Dorothy loved entertaining; whether it was during the holidays at their home in Washington, D.C. or during the summer months in Annapolis, Maryland. Everyone was welcome!
Most of all, Dorothy loved playing card games – Spades, Bid Whiz, Solitaire, Hearts, Tonk, Go Fish, King Corners, . . . you name it! She enjoyed playing with kids and adults. But her passion was bridge. She was an avid bridge player and belonged to several bridge clubs including Club Aquilas and The Dubridgettes.
Dorothy leaves behind to cherish her memory, her devoted husband Alvin H. Waring, Sr.; daughter, Marcia Renee Waring Furey; son Alvin H. Waring, Jr.; grandsons Ahmad Waring and Avery Spencer Furey; granddaughter Kiana Waring; sister Nanny Mapson, and brother Albert Brinkley, as well as many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and cherished friends.
