
Fred Flatow of Bethesda Maryland passed away after a long illness on September 15, 2023. Fred was born in Königsberg Germany in 1928. In 1938, his family escaped to Santiago Chile. There, he met and married Ursula Goldschmidt and, in 1948, the couple emigrated to the United States. Arriving without even a high school diploma, he earned a master’s degree in electrical engineering from George Washington University and subsequently worked at Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, MD for 30 years. He was the project manager for the International SarSat program, which placed transmitters in planes and boats to locate them using satellites during emergencies. He is survived by his wife of 75 years, Ursula Flatow and three children Ruth Shapiro, Steven Flatow and Daniel Flatow and five grandchildren. The funeral and interment will be held at Garden of Remembrance, 14321 Comus Rd, Clarksburg. Shiva will be held at the home of his daughter Ruth Shapiro, 102 Claybrook Dr. Silver Spring, MD. Shiva will be between 1pm and 5pm and 6:30pm - 9pm with services at 7pm. In Lieu of flowers donations should be sent to the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum or JSSA Hospice.
