February 20, 1939 - November 12, 2025
Gail (Caplan) Leventhal passed away peacefully at the Casey House of Montgomery Hospice on November 12.
She is survived by Robert (Bob), her husband of 47 years; son Benjamin (Halle) Barnett; stepdaughters Madeline Berger and Stacey Gayer, stepson Jeffrey (Judy) Leventhal; brother David Caplan; grandchildren Max (Becca) and Eve Barnett, David, Bradley, and Natalie Leventhal, Aliya and Harley Berger, and Sequoia Gayer; and numerous beloved cousins.
Gail was born in Pittsburgh, PA to Selma and Morris Caplan. She attended American University in Washington, DC and settled in the Hillandale neighborhood of Silver Spring. She and her first husband adopted Benjamin in 1966. She was a single parent for 10 years before marrying Bob in 1978 and embracing a blended family with an open heart.
For 30 years, Gail worked as the administrative assistant to the director of the Prince Georges County Library Systems. Later she held a similar part-time role at Adas Israel Synagogue.
In 2008, Gail and Bob moved to Leisure World, where she spent 18 happy years. Every winter for many years, they traveled to Mexico to enjoy the beach, the seafood, and many friends. An avid reader and mahjong devotee, Gail was also involved in programming activities for the high-rise building where they lived.
No matter what challenges Gail faced in life, she neither complained nor deferred responsibility. She would simply and without fuss, roll up her sleeves and get the needful thing done. At every stage of her life, she cultivated an ever-widening circle of friends, a great many of whom remained dear her entire life. She cherished every friendship and was loved and respected by many. Her deep caring for her extended family was the glue that kept them connected. Her winning smile, caring personality, and delicious baking will remain forever embedded in the hearts of her loved ones. She will never be forgotten.
In lieu of flowers, if anyone is moved to make a contribution in Gail’s memory, the family suggests Doctors Without Borders or the International Rescue Committee.
A chapel service will be held at Judean Memorial Gardens / Cemetery, located at 16225 Batchellors Forest Road, Olney, Maryland, 20832, on November 14, 2025, from 10:00 am to 11:00 am. A graveside service will follow at the same location from 11:00 am to 11:30 am.
