Born on October 22, 1942 in Ridgeway, Virginia, Geneva was the fourth child of Robert D Dodson (1910-1997) and Maggie R Draper Dodson (1912-1985). She departed this life at Holy Cross Hospital in Silver Spring, Maryland rather suddenly after a brief illness.
Geneva attended the public schools in Henry County, Virginia where she graduated in 1961 as salutatorian of her class from George Washington Carver High School in Fieldale, Virginia. After high school, Geneva attended Virginia Union University in Richmond, Virginia as a Business major. Here is where she met and later married (soon-to-be Dr) Linwood Russell Turner of Schenectady, New York, and together they would have three children: son Linwood Russell, Jr born in Newport News, Virginia, daughter Cheryl Lynne born in Washington, DC, and daughter Christe Anne born in Nashville, Tennessee while Linwood, Sr attended Meharry Medical School. Eventually, the medical career of Linwood Sr brought the family back to the Washington DC area, where they settled in Silver Spring, Maryland. The family had a few homes in the area, and Geneva lived in the final family home from 1987 until her passing.
Geneva was a happy homemaker and loved to cook homemade meals for her family, especially for holiday feasts. She loved to bake and often made foods from scratch. She supported, and transported, her children in their adolescent activities, from Linwood Jr’s Little League football games and high school hockey practices, to Cheryl’s horseback riding lessons, to Christe’s tennis lessons. Geneva took pride in keeping a spotless and almost museum-like home, as well as maintaining her fashionable, flawless appearance. Geneva was a movie buff since her childhood and enjoyed reading the book before watching the movie. One of her favorite movies was An Officer and A Gentleman, and her favorite actors included Richard Gere, Denzel Washington, and Brad Pitt. Geneva was an Elvis fan, and because of her children’s very different musical tastes, also enjoyed the likes of Rush, Luther Vandross, and Duran Duran. Over the years, Geneva traveled to various locales, including Las Vegas, Hawaii, Miami, and New York City in the US and many Caribbean islands, such as Aruba, Cancun, Puerto Rico, and Bahamas. Geneva had a beautiful, harmonious soul and, simply put, just loved spending time with and nurturing her family and maintaining strong, lifelong relationships with those she met throughout her journey. Anyone who knew Geneva, even briefly, felt connected to her right away and truly understands how deeply she loved, was loved, and will be missed.
Geneva leaves behind to cherish her memory, her three children Linwood R Turner, Jr of Silver Spring, MD, Cheryl L Turner-Bucksell of Columbia, MD, and Christe A Turner of Ashton, MD; a brother Larry D Dodson (wife Marie) of Stoneville, NC; three granddaughters, Jasmine Lindsay, Amber Turner, and Brooke Bucksell; five great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Geneva was preceded in death by her parents Robert D and Maggie R Dodson; sisters Jean Dodson, Virginia D Dodson, and Clara M Hayes; brothers Clyde J Dodson, Sr, Anthony Dodson, and Wayne Dodson; niece Katrina Hayes; and two great-granddaughters Kayla and Samira Lindsay.
A memorial service will be held on Friday, December 6, 2024 at Hines-Rinaldi Funeral Home in Silver Spring, Maryland. Visitation will be at 2pm, followed by services beginning at 3pm. The family welcomes flowers to be sent directly to the funeral home.
