He was born in Berdychiev, Ukraine, former Soviet Union, on July 18th, 1946 to Simon and Esther Nusinovich. Simon served in the Soviet Army, survived the war, and remained in Berdychiev with Esther, where they had Gregory. They moved back to their family home in Odessa six months later, and Gregory spent the next eighteen years of his life there. Gregory received both his B.S. and Ph.D degrees from Gorky State University in 1968 and 1975, before going to work at Gorky Radiophysical Research Institute. He later served as the head of the research group at the Institute of Applied Physics of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR. Gregory met his future wife Yelena on April 2nd, 1968, and they married three months later on July 2nd. They immigrated with their three daughters Maria, Liza, and Paulina, and Yelena’s mother Nadia Naydich, to the United States in January 1991. He joined the research staff at the University of Maryland, where he remained until his retirement in 2019. In 2004, Gregory published a book, “Introduction to the Physics of Gyrotrons”. He was honored with the status of Research Scientist Emeritus upon retirement.
Following the premature death of their eldest daughter, Maria, Gregory and Yelena welcomed her husband, Igor, and her twin daughters, Hannah and Essie, into their home, and raised them from their toddler years through their college education.
Gregory traveled frequently for work, often internationally. He loved puzzles, jazz and classical music, ballet, and opera. He enjoyed collecting stamps and coins, playing solitaire, and going for walks with his friends in Carderock. He also liked creative writing, and published a book, “Paper Balloons”, in 2020. The publication was a gift from his friends and colleagues in Russia.
Gregory is survived by his wife Yelena, brother Sasha and his family, daughters Liza and Paulina, sons-in-law Igor, Josh, and Dan, and grandchildren: Hannah, Essie, Noah, Philip, Maya, and Nadia.
Gregory’s memorial service will be at Congregation Beth El in Bethesda, MD, on Monday, December 15th at 10am, and his burial will be at Mt. Lebanon Cemetery in Adelphi, MD at 12pm, followed by the first shiva at Silk Road Choyhana in Gaithersburg, MD.
The family will be glad to see friends and relatives on December 16th and 17th (Tuesday and Wednesday) from 6-9pm, in their home at 6204 Lone Oak Dr., Bethesda, MD 20817, for shiva.
Thank you to everyone who is supporting our family during these hard times.
