Hong Joong Kwak

With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of our cherished Hong Joong Kwak on November 24, 2025 at the age of 97. He was born on October 15, 1928 to Yong Buk Kwak and Jang Bok Choi in Hamgyong Namdo, North Korea. Hong was the youngest of 7 children.

After the Korean War began on June 25th, 1950, he was able to get onboard the SS Meredith Victory in December of that year to travel to South Korea, but he was the only family member to make it. The SS Meredith Victory was a United States Merchant Marine Victory ship, a type of cargo freighter built for World War II. Under the leadership of Captain Leonard LaRue, the SS Meredith Victory is credited as the largest humanitarian rescue operation by a single ship, evacuating more than 14,000 refugees in a single trip during the Korean War.

He then enlisted in the Republic of Korea Army. During his service he met his wife, Jung Tae Ok, and married her on June 21, 1959. He was discharged as a Master Sergeant in November 1973 after 23 years of military service.

On May 10th, 1980, he immigrated to the United States of America to seek a better life for his children. He worked as a carpenter for 25 years in Maryland, creating beautiful traditional shoji screens and creating his own business, "Far East Expression: Oriental Interior Design."

Hong was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather who was known for his kindness, wit, and devotion to his family. He is survived by his wife, Tae Ok Chung; his children, Steve, Mimi (Nick), and Kyu (Ashley); his grandchildren, Emily, Jonathan, Veronica (Steven), Jessica (James), Max, Ryan, Irene, and Jaden; and his great-grandchildren, Chloe, Christoper, and Lucas.

On Wednesday, December 3, 2025, from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm, visitation will be held at Hines-Rinaldi Funeral Home (11800 New Hampshire Ave, Silver Spring, MD 20904). At 6:30 pm, there will be a Memorial Service that all are welcome to join.

On Thursday, December 4, 2025, Requiem Prayers with a viewing will take place at 9:00 am, and a funeral mass will be at 10:00 am at St. Andrew Kim Catholic Church (17615 Old Baltimore Rd, Olney, MD 20832).

At 12:00 pm, the committal service/burial will be held at Gate of Heaven Cemetery (13801 Georgia Ave, Silver Spring, MD 20906). The family invites all to Hwa Gae Jang Tuh Restaurant (2104 Veirs Mill Rd, Rockville, MD 20851) for lunch afterwards.

사랑하는 곽홍중님은 2025년 11월 24일, 향년 97세로 별세하셨음을 무거운 마음으로 알립니다. 1928년 10월 15일 북한 함경남도에서 곽용북과 최장복 부부의 7남매중 막내로 태어났읍니다

1950년 6월 25일 한국전쟁이 발발하자, 그해 12월 SS 메러디스 빅토리호에 탑승하여 남한으로 향했지만, 가족 중 유일하게 남한에 도착했습니다. SS 메러디스 빅토리호는 제2차 세계 대전 당시 건조된 미국 상선의 빅토리호로, 화물선의 일종입니다. 레너드 라루 선장의 지휘 아래, SS 메러디스 빅토리호는 단일 선박으로 진행된 최대 규모의 인도적 구조 작전으로 평가받으며, 한국전쟁 중 단 한 번의 항해로 14,000명이 넘는 피난민을 대피시켰습니다.

그 후 그는 대한민국 육군에 입대하고, 군 복무중 아내 정태옥과 만나 1959년 6월 21일 혼인했습니다. 1973년 11월에 23년의 군복무를 마치고 상사로 전역했습니다.

1980년 5월 10일, 그는 자녀들의 더 나은 삶을 위해 미국으로 이민했습니다. 그는 메릴랜드에서 가장25년간 목수로 일하며 아름다운 한국 전통 병풍을 만들고 "Far East Expression: Oriental Interior Design" 이라는 사업체를 설립했습니다.

곽홍중님은 사랑받는 남편이자 아버지, 할아버지, 증조부였으며, 친절, 재치, 그리고 가족에 대한 헌신으로 유명했습니다. 그는 아내 정태옥과 자녀 곽규호, 손미란 (손영석), 곽규동 (박현정); 손주 곽에밀리, 곽도훈, 손지희 (스티븐), 손명희 (박정수), 손종민, 곽도희, 곽도연, 곽도헌; 그리고 증손주 별, 우주, 하늘을 남겼습니다.

문상: 2025년 12월 3일 수요일 오후 4시부터 오후 8시까지 Hines-Rinaldi Funeral Home (11800 New Hampshire Ave, Silver Spring, MD 20904)에서 진행됩니다. 6:30시에 고별예배가 있읍니다.
