Howard Liebowitz died Friday, August 28, 2026, in Rockville, MD, surrounded by his family. He was 85. Howard was born January 3, 1941, to Edythe and Max Liebowitz in New York, NY. He grew up on Long Island, NY with his brother Joel, and sister Marilyn, and graduated from Oceanside High School. He later graduated from C.W. Post College.
Howard lived in New York until 1972, when he moved with his family to Maryland to open an office for New York Life Insurance, settling in Wheaton, MD. After moving to Montgomery Village in 1974, Howard became very active at Gaithersburg Hebrew Congregation and held many leadership positions there.
Anyone who knew Howard knew that his family was everything to him. He was immensely proud of his children, Bruce, Andrew, and Kara, and thought of their spouses, Shelly, Ali, and Alan, as his children. He was never happier than when he was with his grandchildren, Ely, Mai, Smadar, Dan, Zach, Josh, Arielle, and Braden. Their accomplishments in school, sports, and extracurricular activities were some of his greatest joys, and Howard was frequently on the sidelines of sporting events cheering them on. Howard married Carolyn in 2010, and they took immense pleasure in spending time with their 13 shared grandchildren, in both the U.S. and Israel. Carolyn’s children Jared and Justin, and their families, were an important part of Howard’s life, and continued to be after Carolyn’s death. Howard lost Carolyn to cancer in 2022, after which point he moved to Leisure World in Silver Spring, MD. Howard found love again in his partner Elaine, who remained steadfast by his side in his last days.
Howard loved golf and spent many rounds at RedGate Golf Course in Rockville, MD where he was the de facto course mayor. He enjoyed spending 18 holes with people he just met and took great pride in his game, including when he aced a hole-in-one. Howard was very musically inclined, being a talented pianist and having a great voice. He was a skilled ballroom dancer and loved spending time on the dance floor. Those who knew Howard will remember him for his warm, friendly nature and his ability to be the connecting force in any room he entered.
Howard is survived by his children: Andrew (Ali) Liebowitz and their children, Zach, Josh, Jake, and Rachel; and Kara (Alan) Silbert and their children, Arielle and Braden. He is also survived by his daughter-in-law Shelly Liebowitz, grandchildren Dan, Smadar, Ely, and Mai, and great-granddaughter Kedem. Howard is preceded in death by his son Bruce, by his parents, Edythe and Max, his brother Joel, and sister Marilyn.
To honor Howard's memory, please consider a donation to The V Foundation (https://www.v.org), an organization that funds cancer research. Howard was a bladder cancer survivor. In addition, these donations are in honor of his late wife Carolyn and son Bruce, who both died fighting cancer.
A celebration of Howard's life will be held in the chapel at the Garden of Remembrance Memorial Park at 14321 Comus Road in Clarksburg, MD on Friday, September 4, 2026 at 11:00am.
