I am the daughter of Frances and "Wally" Wolowitz, and the niece of Gertrude and Irv Keller.
At first I knew Irvin through these family ties, but early, in the 1970's, when the JCC opened , in Rockville, a friend suggested I teach a class in "Sculpture" there. I was nervous because, although I had studied art, I had never taught. When I hesitated to apply, my friend quipped
" How many Jewish sculpture teachers could there be?"
Irvin became one of my first students!
Teaching adults was new to me. Irvin assured me that I "doing a good job"! He became a very enthusiastic student! It became clear that he was better at "carving" clay than he was "building" with it!
We joked ,that might be due to his background Washington Beef!
Irvin enjoyed the class, and he always had a big hug for me, whenever we met, over the years; introducing me as " his teacher"! I credit Irvin's early support and encouragement as one of the reasons I later joined an apprentice teaching program at Sidwell Friends School, and taught, there for 23 years.
I will always treasure the memory of our long friendship!
I will miss his strong hug and warm smile!
My husband,Tevy, and I, extend our love, and deepest sympathy to your family.
