James Winston Nalls Jr.

James Winston Nalls, Jr.-James Winston “Jim” Nalls, Jr. (83) was born in the District of Columbia to James W. Nalls, Sr. and Annette Magill Nalls and grew up in Northwest DC. He departed this life peacefully on February 14, 2021. Jim graduated from Woodrow Wilson H.S. in the District and attended Montgomery Community College, as well as various schools and training programs in the military. He served as an engineer in the Second Armored Division during the Cuban Missile Crisis and was deployed to Germany during Operation Big Lift, to stem a likely attack by Warsaw Pact forces into West Germany.

Following his Honorable Discharge, Jim joined the D.C. Public Library system where he worked for many years as a reference librarian and served as a shop steward and President of his AFSCME local. Promoted to a supervisory position, he continued to work at the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library until his retirement.

He was the devoted husband of Mary Ford Nalls to whom he was married for 52 years. In retirement, Jim enjoyed spending time with his wife, serving as president of his homeowners’ association in Silver Spring, MD, and volunteering in the Montgomery County Public Library system. He was devoted to family and country and was an avid baseball fan. Throughout his life, Jim took pleasure in adopting and caring for stray cats.

He is survived by his wife Mary Ford Nalls, sisters Patricia Nalls Dixon of Cary, NC; Janet Nalls Nazarian of the District, and Mary Lou Nalls Baden of Edgewater, MD, also brother Fr. Charles H. Nalls of Amherst, VA, and numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews. He was predeceased by a brother John Laurence Nalls who was killed in the Vietnam War.

Graveside services and interment will take place on Saturday, February 27, 2021, at 1:00 p.m., Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Aspen Hill, MD.
