Known to everyone as “Jim” or “Jimmy,” he was born on December 26, 1948, in Washington, DC, to Philomena (Iacangelo) Wellen and James Vernon Wellen Sr. Jimmy lived a life defined by curiosity, kindness, and connection. He had a deep love for the medical field and history, and he found joy in hiking, a well-played game of cribbage, and good conversation.
What truly set Jimmy apart was the way he made people feel. He took genuine interest in others, always making time to listen, to talk, and to get to know those around him. Whether speaking with family, friends, or strangers, Jimmy had a way of making people feel seen and valued. Above all else, his greatest joy and pride were his grandchildren, who were the light of his life.
Jimmy leaves behind four children who loved him dearly: Jamie Wellen McCallum of Dedham, Massachusetts; Brian Lynagh of Silver Spring, Maryland; Michael Wellen of Ellicott City, Maryland; and Matthew Wellen of Silver Spring, Maryland. He is also lovingly remembered by his nine grandchildren, who will carry forward his stories, laughter, and spirit. He is survived as well by his sister, Teresa L. Wellen, and his brother, Anthony M. Wellen.
He was preceded in death by his parents, James V. and Philomena Wellen, and by his sister, Patricia L. Wellen.
Jimmy will be deeply missed and forever remembered for his warmth, his generosity of spirit, and the love he shared so freely with those around him.
