
JANET GIBBS HUNT Of Silver Spring, Maryland, on Wednesday, December 14, 2016, following a long illness. She died surrounded by loved ones and dedicated caregivers. Janet was born in Oakland, California on October 27, 1940. Daughter of Owen and Frances Gibbs. Sister of James Gibbs, Mary Delaney, David Gibbs, and Carol Tenter. Mother, with Larry Hunt, of Brian and Matthew Hunt. Mother-in-Law of Lauren Wise. Grandmother of Alexandra and Jonathan Hunt. Dedicated Partner of Beverly Abreu. Janet graduated from the University of Redlands, and earned her Ph.D. at Indiana University. She served from 1971-2004 on the Sociology faculty at the University of Maryland, where she was instrumental in launching the Women’s Studies program. She was very active in the Campus Senate and, nationally, in establishing Sociologists for Women in Society. Janet’s scholarly research on dual-career couples, changing family patterns, gender, and religion in the United States is widely cited. She was an award-winning teacher, a pioneer in academia, and a mentor to many women who have followed in her footsteps. Janet was endlessly generous and creative, enjoying many hobbies including photography, music, craft-making, travel, and swimming. She is deeply missed by many friends and family members. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, March 25, at Unitarian Universalist Church of Silver Spring, 10309 New Hampshire Avenue, at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association or to a charity of one's choice.
