Joan was born on December 2, 1938, in Brooklyn, New York to Murray and Shirley Levy. She spent much of her childhood with her beloved cousins, and attended Erasmus High School, which she thoroughly enjoyed. She then attended the University of Rochester, where she studied education and met her husband of 65 years, Dr. George Stricker. As an undergraduate student, to fulfill a research requirement, Joan signed up for a study being conducted by graduate student George, and their six-decade love story began. Joan was a teacher in Baltimore County for several years, and then moved to Great Neck, New York in 1963, where she raised her two children, Jocelyn and Geoffrey, and started an editing and proofreading business, Strike-It-Write. She moved to Leisure World in Silver Spring, Maryland, in 2004, beginning a new chapter, living closer to her cherished grandchildren, and making many dear friends along the way.
Joan had a huge heart and valued her dedication to her family and friends above all else. She was the glue that held everything and everyone together. Joan was a true force of nature and a great presence, advocating fully on behalf of those she loved. She was an avid reader, always with a book by her side and participating in many book clubs, a huge consumer of news, aware of all public events, skilled in a wide variety of craft projects, and the most organized person on the planet. Joan also loved to garden, and she meticulously kept the flowers and shrubbery in her Great Neck home in a world-class manner.
Joan was an incredibly devoted and loving wife, mother, and grandmother. She is survived by her husband, George Stricker; her daughter Jocelyn Mendelsohn and son-in-law Steven Mendelsohn; her son, Geoffrey Stricker and daughter-in-law Laura Stricker; and grandchildren Ethan and Noah Mendelsohn, and Jackson, Caroline, and Katherine Stricker.
