Born on May 14, 1928, in Washington, D.C., Marie was the ninth of ten children born to Giuseppe and Rosina Sansalone. Her childhood was filled with vibrant stories of growing up above her family’s Italian grocery store on First and C Streets, SW, at the foot of the Capitol, now the site of The Rayburn Building. Marie’s life was deeply rooted in faith, family, and community, and her voice—captured in the Capitol Hill History Project—reflected the humor and charm that defined her.
Marie graduated from St. Cecilia’s Academy and married Nicolo “Nick” D’Amico in 1954. Together, they raised three sons, Mark, Matt, and Chris, and built a life centered on love and music. A talented cook, devoted homemaker, and supportive mother, Marie also held jobs as a bank teller and dental assistant and sold Ovation cosmetics. Nick’s passing in 1988 marked a turning point in her life, but her indomitable spirit found joy again when she married John Guy in 1990. Their love story was of mutual devotion and shared faith, enriching their lives and blended family.
Marie was a beacon of love and laughter. She was known for her angelic singing voice, adventurous spirit, and ability to welcome everyone. She loved her family deeply, cherishing her roles as “Mima” and “Ree-Ree” to her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren. Aunt Rie was also a favorite aunt to her many nieces and nephews.
Marie’s final days were spent celebrating the holidays with joy and love. Her legacy lives on through her sons, Mark (Shelly), Matthew (Teri), and Christopher D’Amico; daughter-in-law Judy D’Amico; stepson John A. Guy (Kimberly); stepdaughters Nancy Lounsbury (Leo) and Anita Coleman; and brother Victor Sansalone (Teresa).
She is survived by her 11 grandchildren Michelle Gaske (Austin), Daniel D'Amico (Hillary), and Dominic D’Amico, Joseph Guy (Olivia), Jennie Pearce (Jake), Kevin Guy (Alison), Kim Wilson (James), Brian McGrath, Keith McGrath, Emily Krapf (Kenon), and Jody Simpkins (Joanna), 22 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren, She was preceded in death by her first husband, Nick D’Amico; her second husband, John Guy; and her brothers, Golfredo, Michael, and Aldo Sansalone.
A visitation will be held on Tuesday, January 7, from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Hines-Rinaldi Funeral Home, 11800 New Hampshire Avenue, Silver Spring, MD. A funeral service will take place on Wednesday, January 8, at 11:00 a.m., at Living Word International Christian Church, 16819 New Hampshire Avenue, Silver Spring, MD, followed by a reception at the church.
Marie will be remembered for her warmth, humor, faith, and the profound love she shared with everyone in her life.
