

Sylvia Marie Groseclose McQuilkin passed away on Tuesday, April 20, 2021 at Friends House in Sandy Spring, Maryland. Marie was born on July 15, 1925 to Frank and Sylvia Groseclose in Roanoke, a city in the Blue Ridge mountains of southwest Virginia. She had two sisters, Margaret and Edna Mae.
Marie graduated from Jefferson High School in Roanoke in June of 1942 and afterwards was active with the USO during WW2. Marie worked at Cunningham- Lewis Corp and Peoples Perpetual, both in Roanoke.
Marie married Kearney “Mac” McQuilkin on September 7, 1946. They honeymooned in the Tennessee mountains and New Orleans. In the summer of 1949, they moved to Takoma Park, Maryland for Mac to attend Bliss Electrical School. Marie worked for Ronald Senseman-Architect and Doug Bradshaw-Lawyer for many years prior to adopting their sons David in 1953 and Robert in 1955. The family attended Shepherd Park Christian Church. After moving to Silver Spring, Maryland, Marie became a Charter member of Heritage Christian Church . Marie’s faith was her foundation and she served 54 years in in many leadership capacities at Heritage including Elder, Deacon, Treasurer, Christian Women’s Fellowship (member, President and Treasurer), Elder-Emeritus, Sunday School Teacher and Outreach Ministry. She was a Meals on Wheels volunteer for 15 years and volunteered at the Colesville Council of Community Congregations ( C4) Baby Closet for 10 years.
Marie was a loving mother, devoted grandmother and friend to many. In her later years, she enjoyed attending Senior Camp at the Bethany Beach Conference Center. Marie was an avid bridge player and enjoyed reading and working crossword puzzles.
Marie is survived by three children David ( Kathy), Robert ( Deborah ) and Frank (Julie) McQuilkin; Nephew( 4th son ) Tony Gilbert; six grandchildren: Stephanie, Jimmy, Kasey, Joey, Brett and Kelly; five great-grandchildren: Waylon, Johnny, Cameron, Collins and Brooks.
Friends and family are invited to celebrate Marie's life at 12 noon on Saturday, June 5th at Heritage Christian Church (15250 New Hampshire Ave., Silver Spring, Maryland 20905. Due to COVID 19 restrictions, we are only accepting a total of 50 people for the service, should you have any questions please contact the family for more information.
