Mary A. Richmond

Of Silver Spring, MD. After more than a year of declining health, Mary A. Richmond, passed away November 30, 2016 in her home at Riderwood Retirement Center with her daughter and son by her side. Mary was born in St. Petersburg, Florida, March 25, 1927 to Edward Richard Hall and Anne Camille Triner. Mary grew up in St. Petersburg, graduating from St. Petersburg High School. She later accompanied her mother and stepfather, Colonel James Woodall Greene, to Tokyo at the close of World War II where Colonel Greene served on the personal staff of General Douglas MacArthur. It was in Tokyo that Mary met and married then-Captain Melvin E. Richmond (Colonel, US Army Ret.). Over the next 22 years, Mary accompanied Mel to various duty stations throughout the U.S. and in Europe as he served the nation until Mel's retirement from the Army in 1970 while living in Alexandria, Virginia. They remained in Alexandria as Mel embarked on a second career, this time with the Fairfax County Public School System. When Mel fully retired in 1993, he and Mary returned to Mary's hometown of St. Petersburg where they lived until Mel's death in September 1997. Mary moved from her home in St. Petersburg to Riderwood in 2005 to be closer to her family. Mary will be remembered most for her limitless love for and pride in her family, especially her children, and her good humor. Mary is survived by her daughter, Anne Camille Street (Thomas) of Brookeville, MD; her son Melvin E. Richmond, Jr. (Karen), of Purcellville, VA; and her daughter-in-law, Jane Malvern "Malli" Richmond, of Franklin, TN, wife of Mary's son David H. Richmond (deceased). She is also survived by six grandchildren, Lauren Hill (Bryan) and Ryan Street (Julia), Chris Richmond (Marlene) and Jessica Richmond, and Daniel Richmond and AnnaMary Richmond; and four great grandchildren, Maggie and Reagan Hill; and Holly and Thomas Street III. Mary also leaves behind her best and dearest friend of the past several years, George Mutimer, also of Riderwood. There will be a memorial service on Saturday, December 17, 2016 at 11 a.m. at Riderwood Village Chapel, 3110 Gracefield Rd., Silver Spring, MD 20904. Burial will be private at Arlington National Cemetery where she will rest with her husband Mel. Memorial gifts may be made to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society in memory of Mary and her son David Hall Richmond, who suffered from MS before passing away in May 2010.
