Mary Eleanor Slayton

Mary Eleanor Slayton, age 85, of College Park, Maryland, passed away on Thursday, April 6, 2023. Born in Miami, FL, Mary moved as a young girl to College Park, where she spent the rest of her life. Mary was the beloved daughter of the late William and Lois Shoaf Slayton and sister of Sally Slayton Reohr (Dick) of Union Springs, NY, Charlotte Slayton Kaetzel (Dave) of Kailua, HI, and William Slayton Jr. of Fort Collins, CO. She was also a loving aunt to her twenty-eight nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and -nephews, and great-grand-niece. She was predeceased by her grand-niece Sarah Jean Reohr.

Mary, who had a great passion for literature and learning, earned an M.A. in English from the University of Maryland and was a librarian at the Library of Congress for many years. She was a published poet. Professionally and personally, Mary was closely associated with the late Dr. George A. Panichas, a University of Maryland English professor and editor of the journal Modern Age.

Mary will be remembered for her loving kindness, high intelligence, and warm generosity. Her family and friends rejoice that she is with Our Lord in this Easter season.
