Dear Gray Family,

My name is Salli Silliman and I worked with Matt at The Smithsonian American Art and Portraiture Museum years ago.  I now work at The Smithsonian Native American Indian Museum and my colleagues from the past searched me out to inform me of Matt's passing.

Matt was a kind-hearted man, hard working, with a wonderful sense of humor.  Everyone on staff appreciated him.

My thoughts and prayers go out to the family and friends of our beloved Matt. After working together for almost 17 years, he became like a brother to me. Matt was the best guy I ever worked with.  He will be missed. May his soul rest in peace. 

Christmas was forever cherished at your home.  I was part of the Rivera’s who arrived every Christmas.  I share so much love and celebrating with you.  Matt was part of my past that was so precious.
Brendan, this hurts beyond any words.  We share so much loss.

He was an amazing person and coworker. RIP

Matt was the sweetest, most thoughtful man I have ever met. Matt had an incredible sense of humor and would write daily horoscopes full of nonsense for me knowing how much I loved astrology. He would hide notes and write beautiful limericks that creatively incorporated all of our inside jokes. We worked together at American History for some years before his surgery.  He introduced me to many wonderful things and was an entire wealth of (strange) knowledge. He was the absolute best gift-giver and gave even better compliments.  I have never met anyone like him and feel blessed to have formed such a beautiful friendship over the years. Although the news of his passing deeply saddens me I am glad he is at rest, and no longer in pain.🤍 

Brendan and Bob, I'm so sorry to hear about Matt.  Nancy just told me.  You have been in my thoughts often over the years.  As always, fond memories last a lifetime   Love, Beth.

Matthew was the beloved son of the late Robert W. and Mary Blanca Gray; brother of Robert W., Jr. and Brendan J. Gray; uncle of Robert W. Gray, III; great uncle of R.J. and Ryan Gray. Also survived by cousins and dear family friends Fran Klein, Nancy Asencio and Mendel Lesansky.
