
It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Michael Lee Grable, age 85, who passed away on January 8, 2025. Born on April 4, 1939, in New York to parents Gurnia and Willie Ruth (Mooney) Grable. Michael lived a life filled with love, family, and unwavering devotion to those around him. Michael served his country in the U.S. Air Force and was honorably discharged on August 2, 1958. He then dedicated 44 years of service to the federal government, retiring as Division Chief from NOAA, NMFS Financial Services Division on March 3, 2006. Throughout his career, Michael was instrumental in restructuring and transforming the U.S. fishing industry, with many of his contributions having a lasting and far-reaching impact on the field. His professional accomplishments were a testament to his dedication and vision.Beyond his career, Michael was a lifelong learner, with a passion for reading and an insatiable curiosity that spanned many subjects. He loved engaging in spirited debates and discussions, always eager to share his knowledge and hear different perspectives. Michael is survived by his beloved and devoted wife, JoAnna (Priest) Grable. He was a cherished father to his four children: Guinevere (and husband Timothy) Sasser, Gelind (and husband Duncan) Johnston, Gerald (and wife Wendi) Grable, Megan Grable, and two stepchildren: Wendy Bergonse and William (BJ) Matson, as well as his adoring grandchildren: Christiana Sasser, Kirby Matson, Brody Matson, Matteo Bergonse, Jack Pilla and Charlie Pilla. He is further survived by his loving sisters Audrey (and husband Don) Peterson and Joyce Engle.Together with his wife JoAnna, Michael found great joy in rescuing, fostering, and loving many dogs over the years, earning their home the affectionate title of “Dog Hall.” The unconditional love they shared with these animals was a testament to Michael’s compassion and kindness. In accordance with his wishes, there will be no formal funeral service. A family gathering will be held in the near future to celebrate Michael’s life, and all who knew him are invited to honor his memory in a way that reflects his spirit and love for life.
