Nebiyu Tulu Fitta was born on October 12th, 1994 in Silver Spring, Maryland to the loving parents of Tadelech Ramet and Fitta Geletu. On June 3, 2026, we lost the beautiful, dynamic and multifaceted soul that was Nebiyu Tulu Fitta. Though Nebiyu was only with us for 31 short years, we were privileged to experience the remarkable person he was and the lasting impact he made on all who knew him.
Exceptionally gifted at a young age, Nebiyu earned admission to the Takoma Park Middle School Mathematics, Science, and Computer Science Magnet program, a highly competitive program with an approximate 15% acceptance rate. His acceptance reflected the remarkable intellect and curiosity that defined his life. He later earned admission to the prestigious Communication Arts Program at Montgomery Blair High School, another highly rigorous and selective program that encouraged students to become lifelong learners, and that he was. In recognition of his outstanding academic achievement and leadership, Nebiyu was bestowed the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) Scholarship Award by the Montgomery County Board of Education. His academic distinctions earned him a Posse Scholarship offer for a full ride to Bucknell and the University of Wisconsin-Madison, an illustrious scholarship awarded to only 5% of applicants nationwide.
Nebiyu became a member of two organizations that played a meaningful and formative role in his personal growth and development: Forcey Bible Church and the Kappa Alpha Psi Silver Spring (MD) Alumni Chapter’s Kappa League program. He was an active and dedicated member of both communities, serving as a youth counselor at Forcey and president of Kappa League. Through these roles, he demonstrated a commitment to service, mentorship, and inspiring others. Nebiyu was also politically active in his community, volunteering with local democratic campaigns including Tom Hucker’s, and interning for local office.
Nebiyu developed a love for swimming at the early age of three. As a high school senior, he earned first place in the Navy SEALs Fitness Challenge, reflecting his athleticism, discipline, and determination. It was also during high school that Nebiyu began working as a lifeguard, a role he continued into adulthood. Through this work, he demonstrated his commitment to serving others and his deep care for the well-being of his community. An all-around athlete, he competed in the swimming, track and field, and cross country teams while at Montgomery Blair High School. Exemplary of his athletic prowess, he excelled on the track, breaking the 5:00 minute mile with ease and placing #33 on Blair’s all-time record for the 800 meter. He continued his passion by competitively swimming for the Atlanta University Center Consortium TigerSharks while attending Morehouse College, where he earned his Bachelor of Arts in Sociology on a full academic scholarship and graduated Cum Laude and from the Honors Program. At Morehouse, Nebiyu was the Features Association Editor for The Maroon Tiger, the Morehouse Newspaper, and had his own column called “T-Time W/ Neb”. He also contributed richly to student life as an officer for the African Students Association and as a dedicated mentor to incoming freshmen in the New Student Orientation program. Nebiyu quickly made friends with his Morehouse brothers and made a lasting impression on all his professors for being fun, charming, thoughtful, and exceedingly capable in the classroom.
Nebiyu lived with mental health challenges that affected the final years of his life. Despite these challenges, he remained true to his convictions, maintained a strong sense of personal agency, and never wavered in his love for his cherished family and friends.
Nebiyu is irreplaceable, and we will carry his love with us forever.
