Born in Antillo, Sicily, on January 8, 1933, and emigrating to America in 1949, Mr. Smiroldo served as a barber in the DC-area for over 50 years. He was hard-working, kind, and gentle, and always saw the good in people. Beyond his work, Mr. Smiroldo enjoyed reading, Italian politics, Nationals baseball, Commanders football, horseracing, opera, and making wine.
Mr. Smiroldo’s family was central to his life. He was preceded in death by his wife, Santa Smiroldo; his father, Carmelo Smiroldo; his mother, Giuseppa Smiroldo; his sister, Maria Zizzo; and his brother, Tindaro Smiroldo. He is survived by his daughters, Maria Smiroldo Scollar and Elizabeth “Lisa” Smiroldo; his son-in-law, Robert Scollar; and his grandson, Nathan Scollar, whom he cherished deeply.
A viewing will be held at Hines-Rinaldi Funeral Home in Silver Spring, Maryland, on Sunday, September 13, 2026, from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. and from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. A Funeral Mass will be held at Holy Rosary Church in Washington, D.C., on Monday, September 14, 2026, at 10:00 a.m., immediately followed by interment at Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Wheaton, Maryland.
He will be remembered with love and gratitude for a life of quiet strength, kindness, and devotion to his family.
