Richard Stuart Lieberman, 73, passed away peacefully at his home in Bethesda, Maryland surrounded by his family on June 16, 2022. He died of a complication related to his Acute Myeloid Leukemia, which he quietly and bravely battled for over a year.
Dr. Lieberman was an only child born to Joseph A. Lieberman and Rita (née Hackerman) Lieberman in Baltimore, Maryland on January 13, 1949.
Richard received his Undergraduate Degree at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, his Masters Degree from the University of Texas at Austin and his Ph.D. at the California School of Professional Psychology, Fresno. He had a long and successful career both as a psychotherapist and in the private sector creating large scale IT programs for Microsoft in Paris, France and then ultimately concentrating in Behavioral Health at IBM nationally after moving with his wife to his childhood home in Bethesda, Maryland.
While Richard loved his endeavors with his model trains, biking, kayaking, hiking, gardening, his voracious reading and, in his last few years, camping in his new teardrop camper, “Parker“, they were far surpassed by his never – ending commitment and love for his family.
Richard is survived by his wife of 31 years, Sarah (née Oliver), daughter Jessica of Seattle, Washington, Zachary (and his wife of seven weeks, Nicole Grierson), of Vienna, Austria and his granddaughter, Madi Lieberman-Koenig of Washington, DC. He is also survived by his three stepsisters, Vicki Defries of Washington, DC, Diane Defries (Warren Wigutow) of Rockville, Maryland, Ruth Defries (Jit Bajpai) of New York, NY and loving nieces and nephews. In addition he leaves behind his endearing niece, Francesca McCarthy and family in Ireland, his niece Danielle Montenegro (Stephen) of Los Angeles, CA, four loving Lieberman cousins and their wonderful families, the Texas Hackerman families, along with his many precious friends, all who will miss him dearly.
In lieu of Shiva, the family will be welcoming family and friends into their home for two evenings: Friday, June 24 and Saturday, June 25 between 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. to honor Rick in prayer and memories. A memorial service will be held at the family home on Sunday, June 26, at 1 p.m., Bethesda, MD 20817.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Richard S. Lieberman, Rita Hackerman Lieberman Fund for the Hackerman-Patz Family Pavilion, Johns Hopkins Sidney Kimmel Cancer Center, 750 East Pratt Street, Suite 1700, Baltimore, MD 21202
