Mrs. Rita Maria J. Mata

Rita Maria J. Mata, a beacon of literature and grace in Silver Spring, Maryland, passed away peacefully surrounded by loved ones on March 3, 2024. Born on September 25, 1945, to Brig. Gen. Cesar Jimenez and Remedios Kipping, Rita’s early years in the Philippines shaped a life as vibrant as the garden she tended with much care. She married the love of her life, Renato (Spanky) Mata, at Paco Park Church on September 5, 1970.

Rita's journey of learning and teaching began at St. Paul University where she earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in English Journalism. Her first job was as a kindergarten teacher at her alma mater. She taught higher grade levels at Xavier School and at the International School Manila and came full circle as she imparted her love of learning to the students of Woodlin Elementary School, from where she retired.

She leaves behind a legacy of her strong Catholic faith and passionate love of family. She is survived by her spouse, Renato (Spanky) Mata, her children, Margretha Mata Zein (Zoomie) and Carlos V. Mata (Speedy), her siblings, Remedios Rosen, Josefina Hernandez, Jose Jimenez, and Anna Jimenez Ocson, and her cherished grandchildren, Marco Mata, Miguel Zein, Niccolo Zein and Mateo Mata.

Visitation for friends and family will be held on Friday, March 22, 2024 from 4pm-8pm at Hines-Rinaldi Funeral Home at 11800 New Hampshire Ave, Silver Spring, MD 20904.

The memorial service will be held at St. Andrew the Apostle Church, 11600 Kemp Mill Road, Silver Spring, Maryland on Saturday, March 23, 2024 at 11 AM, officiated by Rev. John H. Kennealy.

Rita will be remembered as a devoted educator, a passionate advocate for Filipino antiques, a lover of literature, and a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and sister. Her grace, intellect, and kindness will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
