I was working last evening on my stepmother's estate, and found Dr. Mendelsohn's personal information in her address book. I wanted to let his family know how much he meant to her. This is based on the many times she spoke of him, always in glowing and appreciative terms.

Sherry was born with spina bifida in the 1940s. An early survivor of the condition, she suffered from a lifetime of pain. Dr. Mendelsohn performed multiple surgeries on her.  He then went beyond the doctor-patient relationship and took her under his wing. I believe she worked in his office for many years. She eventually moved on with her education and a new career. However, the Mendlesohns kept in touch with her, corresponded with her, gave her encouragement and support.

He was a bright spark in her life, and I wanted to pass that along. I am a physician as well, and understand what a privilege it is to walk alongside our patients, and there is nothing better than knowing we made a difference in someone's life. Thank you from the bottom of Sherry's and my father's hearts, and mine.

It was December 13, 1988- I just spent a week on bed rest at Prince George’s General Hospital for a herniated disc in my back which was lodged against the nerves and I couldn’t stand straight and was in alot of pain. Bob was my doctor and I called him and said “cut me” - he had this innate calm manner of communication and wasted no time and set up the surgery where he removed a fragmented disc at L4-L5.  His kind demeanor and expertise promoted confidence and ease- I spent a week in the hospital for recovery (times have changed) with no issues and six weeks later, I was playing golf.  He had that “old time “ magic of generating confidence and professionalism in his knowledge and ability.  It was very special back then when doctors were accessible and had that quality of “hands on” communication.  My Dad had it along with Uncle Saul (Schwartzbach), Jerry Sandler,Jack Sugar, Ben Miller, Julie Kauffman, Henry Wolfe, and others.  To me, it was a “Golden Age” of Medicine.  My parents were friends with Greta and Bob which led me to friendships with Anne, Mark, Craig, Sindy and June.  Fran and I were lucky to be included in many of the Mendelsohn events over the years.  We will miss Bob but the memories are solid.  Mark Sugar

One of the best decisions of my life was to begin the practice of neurosurgery as a partner of Bob Mendelsohn's. 
He was a superb neurosurgeon with outstanding clinical judgment, a physician who always took a personal interest in his patients and their well-being, and a wonderful mentor to this "young" neurosurgeon.
I had the privilege of practicing with Bob for over 15 years and I enjoyed every minute of it. His advice was always logical and well thought out. He was well respected by his patients, he's referring physicians, and his colleagues. 
He was, in addition, a caring and loving friend to me, Nana, and our daughters. He was always concerned about our well-being, even during our last phone call with him this winter. Bob was a very special person to all of us and he will live in our memories forever.

Pop was very loving, kind, generous, intelligent and he loved to laugh. I will miss him every day, just like I do his son Mark. 

Dad was the best father in law a guy could have. I was always amazed at how caring and loving he was. Whenever I left the house with Craig he always said “I love you Dan,” and he truly did mean it.
I will miss his laugh, his brilliance, and the love he showed to our family.

I just read the obituary and was saddened to hear this news.  At the conclusion it read "He was loved by everyone he touched."  This is so true.  I worked for him from1972 until 1993 and although he was my employer, he was much more than that.  He was a friend.  He had such a wit and I always looked forward to speaking with him.  We are all so much richer for having him in our lives.  I extend my condolences to his family.  Gerrie and Lee Mangum

Bob Mendelsohn was one of the kindest and warmest people who I have ever known.  He always made me feel like family and couldn't have been nicer to me or to my wife Susan.  He always made me feel special.  What a wonderful man!  I hadn't seen him in a couple of years, but I will miss him.    Rest in peace my friend.
