Robert was the CEO of ARG, a scrap metal recycling operation with 3 locations in Maryland. He worked in his family’s business his whole life, and loved both his work and the people at the company his father, Phil Millstone, first opened in Rockville as Montgomery Iron & Metal in 1949. He took over upon his father’s death in 1978, and in the following decades expanded that company (now called Montgomery Scrap Corporation) to include Baltimore’s United Iron & Metal and other local facilities to form the Atlantic Recycling Group. All together, ARG has provided a legacy of scrap metal recycling in Maryland that spans over 100 years.
Robert was a devoted family man, to his wife of 52 years, Mary Sickles Millstone, and a proud and passionate father to his daughters, Heather Millstone, Jessica Millstone and son-in-law Steve Rivo . His absolute love and joy was being a grandfather to Jones and Sylvie, with whom he would share ice cream for breakfast on the kitchen floor and take on adventurous journeys around the world. He also bestowed copious amounts of treats and bacon to his grand-dogs, Snicks & Bucks, who provided him with endless hours of entertainment and love.
Robert was also a loving brother to Ellen Johnston and husband Mike Johnston, and uncle to Debbie LeGros and Rob Holmes.
He is a legend to all who met him - the memory of his generosity, larger-than-life presence, kindness, and dry sense of humor only matched by fond recollections of his signature cowboy hat & boots, as well as his strong square jawline. He might have been the Bossman, but he treated everyone with respect and equanimity, seeing the value and potential in everyone and helping them to also find it in themselves. He was fiercely loved and will be greatly missed.
In lieu of flowers or condolences the family asks that you consider a donation in Robert’s memory to No Kid Hungry or another organization that provides essential support to children in need.
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.hinesrinaldifuneralhome.com for the Millstone family.
