Rose Mary Mazzaglia:
It is with deepest sorrow to announce the passing of our beloved mother Rose Mary Mazzaglia on Saturday, May 23rd, 2020 at the age of 83. Rosie was born on April 11, 1937 in Washington DC to Gaetano and Josephine Bruno. She grew up on 12th Street in North East Washington DC and attended St. Anthony’s Catholic High School and Immaculata Junior College where she graduated with an Associates in Liberal Arts in 1958. After graduating from Immaculata she accepted a civilian job with the Navy where she moved to Italy and worked at the Naval Air Station in Sigonella, Sicily. It was during that time that she met and fell in love with her husband, Alfio Mazzaglia. After marrying in Sicily, they moved back to the United States where they lovingly raised their family.
Rosie worked for the Naval Hospital in Bethesda, MD as a Medical Secretary to many Pathologists and to the Dean of The Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USUHS) which is a Military Medical School. She also became manager of the Support Services Dept at USUHS. After retirement she worked for her parish St. Catherine Laboure’ in Wheaton, MD and St. Mary’s in Rockville, MD. She was passionate about her Catholic faith and served as a Eucharistic Minister at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception. She was a Secular Franciscan of the St. Mary of the Angels Fraternity, active member of the Council of Catholic Women of the Archdiocese of Washington and a member of the Sodality of St. Catherine Labouré.
Rosie had many friends that lasted a lifetime. She loved cooking and having dinner parties and was famous for her delicious authentic Italian dishes. She will be remembered for her vibrant personality, strength, love and generosity she showed her family. We were blessed to have her as our mother and as our friend and will miss her dearly.
She is survived by her three loving children Francesca Costello, Domenico Mazzaglia and Josephine Mazzaglia-Veliz, her five grandchildren, Angelica Bell, Zachary and Grace Veliz, Grant and Joseph Costello, her great granddaughter Chloe Bell, her loving brother Joseph Bruno and sister-in-law’s Rhea and Glenda Bruno. She was pre-deceased by her loving brother Lawrence Bruno. Her beloved husband Alfio passed away two weeks after her passing.
Mass and Memorial Service will be held Friday, November 13, 2020 at St. Catherine Labouré, 11801 Claridge Rd, Wheaton, MD at 11am, Mass will start at 11:30.
Alfio Mazzaglia:
We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of our father Alfio Mazzaglia on June 7th, 2020 at the age of 82. Alfio was born on May 10, 1938 in the town of Catania in Sicily to Domenico and Francesca Mazzaglia. He is one of 6 siblings-Antonio, Nucha, Angela, Concetto and Rita. Alfio started his career working with his brothers in the insurance business in Catania. Shortly after starting his career, he met and married his wife Rose Mary Bruno. After a beautiful Italian Wedding, he left his childhood home of Catania and started a new adventure moving to the United States with his beloved wife. Together they started and raised their family with an abundance of love.
Alfio was a very determined and hard worker, he quickly learned the English language, became an American citizen and started a new career venture as a chef. He was a magnificent chef and worked at some of the most elite restaurants in Washington, DC at that time. Including the famous upscale and posh restaurant, Paul Young’s where he cooked high end dinners for many customers some of which were important politicians, judges, business executives and entertainers. After retiring, Alfio began working as a real estate agent for Long and Foster Relators, a passion that he enjoyed immensely. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus where he had the honor of serving as Grand Knight. He also was a Eucharistic Minister at the Shrine of the National Basilica, where he would serve together with his wife.
Alfio was known for his charismatic personality, love of life and many talents including gardening which could be seen by his beautiful rose garden he spent many years perfecting. We are grateful for the dedication and love he showed his family and he will be dearly missed.
He is survived by his three children Francesca Costello, Domenico Mazzaglia and Josephine Mazzaglia-Veliz. His grandchildren Angelica Bell, Zachary and Grace Veliz, Grant and Joseph Costello. His great grandchild Chloe Bell, his sister Rita Mazzaglia. He was pre-deceased by his brothers Antonio and Concetto and his sisters, Nucha and Angela and his loving wife Rose Mary Mazzaglia.
