Sergio was born on October 10, 1976, in San Miguel, El Salvador. Son of Dinora Ramos and Cristobal Barrera When he was around seven years old, he migrated to the United States with his mother and siblings to reunite with his father and finally be together as a family.
Maryland became their home, and Sergio embraced it with the openness and warmth that would define his life. He adapted quickly, making friends everywhere he went and leaving an impression on everyone who crossed his path.
From a young age, Sergio had a deep love for animals. He spent countless hours at the neighborhood Nature Center, fascinated by every creature he encountered. That tenderness stayed with him throughout his life. Later, his five dogs - Rasputia, Precious, Pretti, Penny Bonita, and Astro - became his children, his companions, and his joy.
Sergio grew up attending the Washington Spanish Bilingual SDA Church, where he was a Pathfinder. He learned knots, survival skills, and teamwork - but more importantly, he found fellowship and community. Those early experiences planted seeds of faith that would later bring him peace and bring comfort to all of us today.
His teenage years were not easy. Sergio faced challenges that could have hardened him, but instead they shaped him into someone resilient, empathetic, and deeply generous. He eventually found his path in call centers and help desk work, where his patience, humor, and ability to connect with people became his greatest strengths.
Anyone who knew Sergio knew his unique sense of humor - dry, a little sassy, always delivered with that sweet smile that could light up a room. He loved deeply and gave freely.
Gift-giving was his love language. He didn’t just give gifts; he made them personal. He thought about what you loved, what would make you feel seen, and he poured his heart into every gesture. He spoiled his nieces and nephews the way he once spoiled his little sister - with joy, with intention, and sometimes “just because.”
Sergio loved food, and some of our best memories with him were around the table — laughing, sharing stories, and enjoying a meal together. Those moments were simple, but they were sacred. They were Sergio at his happiest: surrounded by the people he loved. He carried a beautiful smile, even when life placed sadness behind it. That was part of his quiet strength - the ability to show love even when he was hurting. And in his final chapter, Sergio accepted Jesus Christ as his Savior. That decision brings us comfort today.
We hold onto the promise that this goodbye is not forever. We remain faithful that we will see him again when Jesus returns.
Sergio was special. He was tender-hearted, funny, generous, and loyal. He loved hard. And he leaves behind a legacy of kindness, devotion, and love that will stay with us for the rest of our lives.
We love you, Sergio.
We will carry you with us always - in our memories, in our stories, and in the quiet moments when we feel your presence.
Until we meet again.
