

With profound sadness and love, we announce the passing of Vance Contee, who departed this life on November 16, 2024, at the age of 48. Born on April 28, 1976, in Washington, D.C., Vance returned to live in Washington, D.C. in the early 90s, after spending much of his childhood in Bowie, MD. His life was marked by resilience, hope, and an infectious love that continues to inspire all who knew him.
Vance was preceded in death by his beloved mother, Juleta Contee, and his brother, Tony Contee. He leaves behind his devoted sister, April Contee, his first cousin Marcellus Anderson, as well as his cherished nieces, Jori Contee Staten and Chantelle Thomas. Vance was also a loving uncle to two great-nephews and a great-niece, whom he never had the chance to meet but would have adored deeply. He is also survived by his devoted childhood friend, Talib Shakir, whose unwavering support and friendship were a cornerstone of Vance’s life.
A passionate learner and creative spirit, Vance shared his love for literature, music, and the arts with all who knew him. His dedication to inspiring others led him to become an active member of the Free Minds Book Club, where he served as a mentor to incarcerated young men and women. Vance’s love for life, laughter, and justice will forever be remembered, and his light continues to shine through the legacy he left behind.
