Bovell, Walter Gerard April 2, 1941 - July 16, 2014 Obituary Walter Gerard Bovell (AKA "Fella") was born in Skeldon, Corentyne, Guyana on April 2, 1941. He was the fourth of nine children born to Oscar Edmund Bovell and Clarene Weigela Bovell. Walter attended St. Margaret's Anglican Primary School and Skeldon Lutheran High School in Skeldon, as well as Central High School in Georgetown, Guyana. He was a kind and supportive brother and son and was cherished by his parents and siblings. in Guyana, Walter was an avid sportsman, playing cricket, volleyball and football (soccer). He excelled at cricket at the village, county and national levels as both a fast bowler and batsman and was named Skeldon's cricketer of the year on two occasions . Newspaper headlines frequently highlighted his dominance on the cricket pitch with comments such as "What Delightful Batting", "Bovell Impresses as Skeldon Beats Albion" and "Bovell was Real Fast". Walter was selected to represent Guyana as a pace bowler on the Colts team which included Guyana's cricket greats Roy Fredericks, Carlyle Miller and Clive Lloyd. He also played benefit games with such cricket legends as Basil Butcher, Rohan Khanai, Carlyle Miller, Clive LLoyd, Joe Solomon and Pat Legall. Walter immigrated to the United States in 1968 and immediately joined the Windies Cricket team within which he again excelled as both a pace bowler and batsman. He delighted spectators at the Saturday and Sunday games at Haines Point by hitting fours and sixes. He served as captain of the Windies team, played on the British Commonwealth Cricket Club's team and in 1979 was selected as a member of the United States Cricket Team to tour England. One the most memorable moments for Walter on this tour was visiting Buckingham Palace and shaking hands with Queen Elizabeth II. Walter is included in the U.S. Cricket Hall of Fame. In addition to sports, Walter enjoyed listening to music and had a large collection of oldies but goodies. He still played his records on his turntable every evening. Walter married Carmen Bynoe in 1966 after a five-year courtship. They parented three children- Marlon and Tessa, who were born in Guyana, and Shanice, who was born in the United States. Walter was a doting and nurturing father who was a constant in the lives of his children and grandchildren to the end of his life. He enjoyed this past July 4th celebrations with his family in Raleigh, NC. Walter came to the United States to pursue higher education. He attended Strayer University and graduated with the Associate's and Bachelor's degrees in Business Administration, after which he pursued studies for the Master's degree. He worked for many years at the Fertilizer Institute in Washington, DC, then later was employed by The Urban Institute where he worked for 25 years prior to his retirement in 2012. He enjoyed fulfilling relationships with colleagues at the Urban Institute and made many friends there. He cherished his friendship with his supervisor, Michael Artis and felt appreciated and respected for his contributions to the work of the Institute. Walter was preceded in death by his parents and brother Robert. He will be greatly missed by his children, Marlon (Vickie), Tessa (Rachman) and Shanice; his grandchildren, Damon, Nyeim, William, Jordan, Shadiva, Davin and Hailee; his brothers Howard, Leslie and Peter; sisters Enid, Doreen, Myrtle and Desiree and numerous cousins, other family members and friends, especially cherished friends, Michael Dupigny and Mike Artis. May his soul rest in God's eternal peace.
