Born on February 11, 1944, in Essex, England, Wendy was the beloved daughter of Ethel Jessie Butcher and Frederick William Thomas. She was a devoted sister to Gloria, Gary, and David, and was preceded in death by her beloved brother, William.
Wendy was a loving and devoted mother to her children, David and Alexis, and a proud grandmother to Braevry and Lucky. Her family was the greatest joy of her life. Although an ocean separated her from her siblings and cherished nieces and nephews in England, they remained ever present in her heart. She delighted in every photograph, every message, and every family update, treasuring the moments that kept them close despite the distance. One of her greatest joys was returning to England to celebrate their weddings and milestones, creating memories she held dear.
Wendy will be remembered for her elegance, intelligence, generosity, compassion, and unmistakable British charm. She possessed a sharp wit, a curious mind, and an enduring zest for life. She had the rare gift of making everyone feel genuinely welcomed, appreciated, and cared for. Her warmth, quiet strength, and thoughtful spirit left a lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to know and love her.
Wendy loved being on the water. She found her greatest peace while sailing the Chesapeake Bay, where the wind and gentle rhythm of the waves brought her a deep sense of joy and freedom. She also loved to cook, enjoyed kayaking and had a lifelong appreciation for art, architecture, interior design, and creating beautiful homes. A gracious hostess, Wendy delighted in gathering family and friends around her kitchen island, where laughter, heartfelt conversation, and lasting memories were shared. She found equal joy tending her flower gardens and watching the birds, deer and wildlife that visited her backyard daily.
Fashion was another expression of Wendy's graceful spirit. She was known for her timeless sense of style, her perfectly coiffed bangs, and was rarely seen without one of her beautifully brimmed hats, worn with effortless elegance and unmistakable confidence. It was a signature look that reflected the sophistication and individuality with which she lived her life.
Throughout every season, Wendy faced adversity with remarkable courage and resilience. Even in difficult times, she remained compassionate, steadfast, and deeply devoted to those she loved. Her quiet strength, generous heart, and unwavering love will remain an enduring example to her family and all whose lives she touched.
While our hearts are broken by her passing, we find comfort in knowing that Wendy is now at peace, free from pain, and reunited with those who preceded her in death—her beloved brother, William; her parents, Ethel and Frederick; her dear niece, Carly; and her cherished circle of lifelong friends in Washington, D.C., affectionately known as "The Swans."
As her daughter, I will remember her not only for the remarkable woman she was, but simply as my Mum—whose love, wisdom, and unwavering belief in me shaped my life in countless ways. Her absence leaves an immeasurable space in our hearts, yet her love will remain with us always.
Forever loved. Forever remembered. Forever in our hearts.
